Chopper Shox Installation
Installation of Chopper Shox seat shock systems requires minimal fabrication. First time installations run approximately 40 minutes and 20 minutes thereafter. Micrometers are useful but not required. You can use any measuring tool you have available.
WARNING!! Never weld the mounting brackets with the shocks installed. The plastic bushings on the shocks will melt and are not replaceable! When ready, always remove the shocks from the mounting brackets and weld the brackets only!
Please use the following instructions to install any of the Chopper Shox seat shock systems:
1. Measure the center of the seat pan from each side, center of cross tube, and center of back bone.
2. Position the seat pan where you want it to sit on the frame. Mark front mount location.
3. Position seat pan and shocks where you want them to sit. Mark their approximate location using a sharpie.
4. Turn seat pan over and re-measure where the front mount is positioned.
Note: Make sure they are symmetrical from left to right and front to back. Keep the front mount at least 3/4" away from the front edge of the seat (needed for seat covering). Once you have the final position of the front mount, tack the front mount to hold it in position.
Note: keep 1/4" clearance under the seat pan to the frame. You will have 1/8" less when the seat is covered with leather. If you are sure the seat is square, you can weld the front mount to the backbone of the frame.
5. With the seat pan straight and with 1/4" under the nose of the seat pan to the frame, re-check to make sure the shocks will fit under the rear of the seat pan. Tack the shocks to the cross tube and seat pan.
WARNING!! Never weld the mounting brackets with the shocks installed. The plastic bushings on the shocks will melt and are not replaceable! Always remove the shocks from the mounting brackets and weld the brackets only!
6. Remove the seat pan and weld all brackets and the front mount into position.
7. Check all welds. Re-install seat pan.
The seat pan can now be removed for covering.
